Koh Tao
Koh Tao ("Turtle Island") is a stunning, mountainous island in the Gulf of Thailand, world-famous for its vibrant coral reefs and inexpensive scuba diving certifications. Accessible only by ferry, it offers a relaxed, tropical vibe with bustling nightlife centered around Sairee Beach and quieter, scenic bays like Chalok Baan Khao
Must-Do Activities
Scuba Diving & Snorkeling: Koh Tao is a top global destination to earn your PADI Open Water certification. Top spots for marine life (including sea turtles and reef sharks) include Shark Bay and Tanote Bay.
Koh Nang Yuan: Just a short boat ride away, this tiny neighboring island is famous for its iconic, three-pronged sandbar and excellent snorkeling.
John Suwan Viewpoint: A short but steep hike in the south that rewards you with panoramic views of the island's coastline and lush jungle canopy.
Sairee Beach: The island’s longest beach is perfect for sunset viewing, beachside dining, and enjoying lively fire shows at venues like AC Bar.
Where to Stay
Sairee Beach: Best for first-timers, solo travelers, and those wanting to be steps away from dive shops, restaurants, and nightlife.
Mae Haad: The arrival point for ferries, highly convenient for amenities, and boasts excellent restaurants and cafes.
Chalok Baan Khao: Located in the south, this area is much quieter and offers stunning, peaceful views—though it is best if you are comfortable renting a scooter to get around.
Getting Around
Scooter Rentals: The most popular way to explore the island, with daily rentals typically costing around ฿250. However, roads can be hilly and unpaved, so caution is advised for inexperienced riders.
Taxis: Open-air 4x4 taxis are available, but fares can be quite expensive, especially for getting to isolated beaches.
Getting There
Because the island does not have an airport, you must arrive by ferry. Popular high-speed catamaran and speedboat services (such as Lomprayah) run daily from the mainland (Surat Thani, Chumphon) as well as from the neighboring islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
